Gustine teen with rare disease sees his wish come true

Garret Spaulding couldn’t hide his smile Friday morning. The moment he’d been planning for years was finally here. The 17-year-old from Gustine, was born with recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa, or EB, a rare disease that causes blisters and tears on the skin, creating painful wounds. EB covers about 80 percent his body, and because of complications and nerve damage, he can no longer walk.

Merced County fires contained; focus remains on Yosemite blaze

The El Portal fire along the edge of Yosemite National Park had charred more than 3,000 acres and was 19 percent contained Tuesday, a jump from the 5 percent containment cited by fire officials the day before. Three fires also burning in Merced County are winding down but remain under observation, according to fire officials.
